Regular brushing and grooming are necessary to maintain good health. The pets coat consist of two different types of hair the soft under coat and the outer guard coat. The coat eventually dies and is replaced with new growth. The dead hair must be removed, even in the "non shedding breeds". Removing the dead hair stimulates circulation, releases necessary oils in the skin, and facilitates new hair growth. It also prevents tangling of the hair called matting which can be very painful for the animal. De-shedding helps reduce unwanted hair in your home by 70% to 90% (which is all the excess hair in your home) matts are very painful, your cat relies on you to brush him and care for him. Cats are groomed for similar reasons.
Shaving Dogs with an under coat Samoyed, huskies, shepherds and Akita, Collies even Pomeranian's have two coats: a rain coat and undercoat. The undercoat keeps them warm; the rain coat keeps them dry and them warm in the winter. When you shave a dog, you get rid of that top rain coat, removing the protective layer. Double coated dogs hair rarely has to be cut. Some think if they shave the dog in the summer the dog will be cooler. In reality, shaving the double coated dog is cruel. Even trimming the top coat can leave the under coat exposed and removed the protection the dog naturally has. Your dog can overheat more easily. Dogs don't have sweat glands as we do. They don't release the heat of their bodies through pores; they release it through panting. So by removing the outer coat, you're removing the insulation that keeps the dog cool. So if your dog is panting yes he's hot but shaving him will make it worse. If your dog needed to get shaved due to severe matts keep him in the shade so he doesn't get a sunburn or heat stroke and give him plenty of water.
When shaving a cat it usually stresses them a lot so I prefer not too unless their isn't any choice, if your cat is matted I will shave them out and then if the cat can tolerate it I will even him out. Yes I know how to do a lions cut but I'm just trying to explain that not all cats can tolerate it. About 80% of cats are usually scared of the clippers and when stress their heart and breathing can elevate and have a stroke. Some cats can be done, but I prefer to say I will shave all the matts out and if the cat seems fine I will even it out as best as possible, it depending on them. Removing their natural insolation is not good either. I will brush your cat out, bathed him shampoo and condition, de-shed your cat and trim his nails, check his ears.
Puppies can be nervous or hyper. Very excited or scared to be somewhere they've never been. Let's take it a little slow, like I do with any pets I work with I try and make the pet feel comfortable and at ease. In some cases it might be best to do it in two visits. Give a bath, wash and dry, trim the nails, check the ears if need plucking or and cleaning. Brushing. Next visit, brushing and hair trim. Most of the time everything can be done in one visit.
An abused and neglected pet needs time and patience when they get groomed because they never been cared for properly they have most likely never been handled and bathed or trimmed, a clipper around them may make them nervous, so it may take a couple more visits until he/she will feel more comfortable and I'm here to help.
Small animals should only get dry shampooed. If the pet is severely dirty it can be washed very very carefully and MUST be fully dried as they can easily catch pneumonia. What I can help is: • if your bunny has long hair and has mats or knots. • trim nails • brush and combing.
